Maersk Growth is the global partner for external innovation at A.P. Moller - Maersk on a mission to digitise and decarbonise supply chains, partnering with promising startups to support new business models and technologies. It runs a structured venture clienting programme: startups at any stage are guided through a Proof of Concept that tests and validates the technology's impact for Maersk, with the aim of turning them into long-term partners.
Maersk uses Temporal for its payment flow, its booking flow, and a development pipeline that replaced its GitHub Actions pipeline. Developers spent most of their time on operational readiness tasks, and adding new features was estimated to take 60 to 80 days. The booking flow is completely powered by Temporal Workflows, the payment orchestrator was replaced with a Workflow, and Maersk self-hosts Temporal. Time to add new features fell to 5 to 10 days, a 6-16x increase in productivity, and developer productivity rose by over 10x.
Maersk uses Kodiak AI's autonomous trucks on a commercial lane that hauls consumer products from Houston to Oklahoma City. The American Trucking Association estimates a shortage of roughly 78,000 drivers, a long-term challenge autonomous trucking has the potential to address. Four round trips per week, 24 hours a day, four days a week, between a Houston facility and a distribution center in Oklahoma City. Eight loads per week, with a safety driver behind the wheel, delivered for Maersk customers since August. The collaboration began in November 2022 as part of Maersk's Global Innovation Center Program and was expanded to this commercial lane.
Maersk intends to purchase over 30,000 tons per year of WasteFuel bio-methanol to fuel its vessels from 2024 on. Maersk's strategy is to reach net zero by 2040, under its decarbonisation theme. The supply is planned to fuel 12 new green methanol powered Maersk ships, each with a 16,000-container capacity, initially made from municipal waste in South America by 2024. WasteFuel aims for its marine fuels to reduce CO2 emissions by 95% compared to conventional fuels and to cut nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 80%. Maersk Growth, the corporate venture arm of A.P. Moller - Maersk, invested in WasteFuel in September 2021; the two then announced this agreement.
A Maersk facility uses Addverb's combined fixed and flexible warehouse automation: AMRs, 2-way pallet and carton shuttles, a multi-carton picking robot and Zippy sorting robots. Maersk needed a flexible solution for omnichannel fulfilment with wide SKU levels, seasonal demand fluctuations and a planned reverse logistics process. Fixed and flexible robots automated the complete warehouse, with a Warehouse Control System managing end-to-end operations. 100,000 pieces dispatched per day to 2500 unique distribution nodes; 16500 pallet positions; 86400 tote positions.
